Hi All,
With all that has been occurring in our nation within the past couple of months, we hope that you are all okay and taking care of yourselves. Together we are stronger, and the Hassle is here to support you and listen to you. We have included links in this newsletter to help educate/inform/provide action options in regards to the SCOTUS Roe v. Wade decision.
We’re sending plenty of love, and we hope that this week’s newsletter can bring you some levity. Keep fighting the good fight.

The Hassle’s Band of the Week!
Retrograde 88
About Retrograde88: Retrograde88 is a psychedelic dream pop band based in Boston, MA. Formed back in October 2021, the bandmates connected while studying at Berklee College of Music. Members include lead vocalist Francesca Londono, bassist Maddie Russell, guitarist Olivia Monarch, drummer Jack Becker, and synth/keys player Gabriel de Solages. They create a euphoric atmosphere with intricate arrangements defined by their vocal harmonies, funky drums & bass lines, lush synths, and beautifully textural guitars.
Genres: We are a Psychedelic Dream Pop band, influenced by Beach House, Radiohead, Melody's Echo Chamber, and Tame Impala.
Upcoming Shows: We are recording and doing a small tour in Texas, July 22nd in Fort Worth at Main at Southside and July 23rd at Three Links in Dallas. We are playing shows in Boston all throughout Fall and Spring, so there will be plenty of shows to catch in Boston!

PICK OF THE WEEK: MAD GOD (2021) dir. Phil Tippett
Screens 6/29-6/30 @ Brattle Theatre (Cambridge)
This animated nightmare was one of my favorite finds on the streaming circuit last year, and you shouldn’t miss this chance to see it on the big screen. The long-gestating passion project of Oscar-winning effects guru Phil Tippett (whose wizardry can be seen in everything from Star Wars and Robocop to Jurassic Park and Starship Troopers), Mad God is a wordless, disturbing, frequently scatological descent into a Bosch-inspired stop-motion inferno. Films this unique and hand-made were rare when Tippett began the project in the early 1990s, and they’re practically non-existent today. It’s currently streaming on Shudder, but this one practically begs to be absorbed on the big screen. (To whet your appetite, read my review from last year’s Fantasia Festival, as well as my interview with Tippett!)

AN INTERVIEW WITH MEI SEMONES
“In blending together her jazz background, Japanese culture, and years of experience writing music, Mei Semones has crafted a sparkling sound that can be found in the recent release of her second project Sukikirai. Semones’s music is personal, creative, and heartfelt; as she has developed a distinct style that is hard not to recognize upon first listen.”

WELCOME TO TURKEYTOWN
“One of the great glories of Cambridge, Mass. is its population of wild turkeys. Ever since I was a kid I’ve thought of them as indicating something specifically Cambridge.”
